Where should I begin?

I was never into the world of MMORPG i.e. Massive MultiPlayer Online Role Playing Game.  I could not understand how people could spend hours chatting with fellow gamers in-game and doing raids, dungeons, trials or just farming - Farming also means farming people, not just mining and harvesting.

The first MMORPG I dabbled with was Fiesta.  It was free to play, so there was no 'investment' factor i.e. no monthly subscriptions....just download and log in.  Perhaps for a first post, I shall talk about the differences between FTP and PTP.

FREE TO PLAY (FTP)

This means exactly that.  Just download the content, create a character and log-in.

The only catch is, the entire gaming experience depends very much on whether one is prepared to just play with the bare minimum.

MMOs have raids i.e. dungeons where a group of gamers run through to get loot, namely gear and weapons being the main items people do this for.

The competition in any MMO in-game is tight and everyone wants to get ahead - either in the raid for a dungeon OR in PVP (person vs person) battles.

Developers/Companies who churn out FTP games need to sustain their offices - so they sell items in their CASH shop.  These items could boost gear, weapons, mounts by a lot.

I'm not the only gamer who started with FTP.  But over time, the illegal gold sellers, bots will become annoying and so the move to PTP.

PAY TO PLAY (PTP)

The most famous, is WOW or WORLD OF WARCRAFT.  WOW lives in almost every teenage household.  I suppose WOW did set the gaming standards in terms of PVP.  But for adults to jump in is trying.  Every gamer logged into WOW looks like a pro.  A slow-mo like me, cannot survive being new to MMOs.  I would probably just quit after an hour.  WOW ran for many many years....MANY.
Finally, it's going to end the run.....finally.....yet many of my friends are still logging in doing their dailies and firm friendships have formed over 12 years for some.

So, WOW was out of the question for me and I really didn't want a free to play.....then, in September of their re-launch year, someone told me about FF14.  I bought the game in October and now, I'm waiting for the 3rd expansion, approaching their 4th year.

I have no regrets.

I don't have friends in-game....I play on a Japanese server and I'm not Japanese.
I only understand a smattering of Japanese provided it's in Romanji.
But I did not start gaming to gain friends.

I game to destress - kill mobs....do dungeon runs.....PVP......
Gaming to me, is what tennis is to some, or what football is to them...or what Yoga is to most.
It's my leisure activity.
I don't pick up my golf clubs or badminton racket or shop after work.

I just log into FFXIV to get my fix.
I don't need to book a court, or worry about peak hour traffic or whether the Yoga class is too far from home because I AM ALREADY HOME.
